When is Choti Diwali Celebrated?
Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated on the fourteenth day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin/Kartik. Choti Diwali 2025 falls on Monday, October 20, 2025. It’s considered one of the most spiritually important days of the Diwali week.
Now, let us see the origin of Choti Diwali and why Choti Diwali is celebrated
What is Naraka Chaturdashi?
Choti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas, and Roop Chaudas, is a festival of Hindus which is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the month of Kartik.
According to Hindu mythology, it commemorates the slaying of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. To honour this event, homes are cleaned, lit up with diyas, and decorated with flowers and rangoli. Families perform Abhyang Snan, a traditional ritual bath with oil and ubtan (herbal paste), said to purify the body and soul.
Origin Of Choti Diwali
The significance of Choti Diwali is in the victory of good over evil and in the triumph of light over darkness.
One of the most well-known stories behind Chhoti Diwali is the tale of Narakasura, a demon king, who was causing havoc and suffering across the heavens and earth. It is believed that on Narak Chaturdashi, Goddess Kali and Lord Krishna, along with Satyabhama, defeated and killed the demon Narak. As Narakasura was destined to be killed by a woman who is an incarnation of Bhumidevi, the king’s mother, Lord Krishna asked his wife Satyabhama to accompany him in the battle, as she was an incarnation of Bhumidevi.
