Manu Parekh<\/strong><\/span><\/a> stands as one of India’s most significant contemporary artists and a modernist painter known for his vibrant and bold artworks. Early Life and Influences<\/b><\/p>\n

Parekh’s early life was spent in Gujarat, where he was exposed to a range of artistic traditions that later shaped his style. His formal training began at the <\/span>Sir J.J. School of Art<\/b> in Mumbai, where he developed a solid foundation in painting. Parekh\u2019s early work explored the relationships between man and nature, as according to him, this was an energetic link that had to be celebrated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Later he also had a short stint at the <\/span>National School of Drama<\/b>. Starting his career in the theatre, he worked as an actor and stage designer for one year and joined <\/span>Weavers’ Service Centre<\/b> as an art designer in 1963 where he stayed for two years. He shifted his base to Kolkata in 1965 and, in 1974, moved to New Delhi, <\/span>joining Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation<\/b> of India as a Design Consultant. He left the corporation later to pursue his career as a freelance artist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having decided to enter modernism via <\/span>Paul Klee<\/a><\/strong> and through the teachings of <\/span>S.B. Palsikar<\/b> at the J.J. School of Art, he decided to experiment with creating a modernism that was engaged with India\u2019s vernacular art forms such as rangoli, embroidery etc., which were familiar to him from his childhood in Gujarat<\/span><\/p>\n

His work has been equally shaped by his personal experiences and travels, especially to the holy city of Banaras, which has been a recurring subject in his oeuvre.<\/span><\/p>\n
