Thota Vaikuntam was born in <\/span>1942<\/b> in <\/span>Burugupalli<\/b>, a small village in <\/span>Telangana.<\/b> Growing up in a traditional village environment profoundly influenced his art, as the simplicity of rural life became the core theme that he would return to repeatedly throughout his career. The vibrant colours, rustic charm, and timeless quality of rural Telangana would later form the hallmark of his work.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his childhood, Vaikuntam was drawn to the local theatre performances which featured mythological stories and local folklore. The elaborate costumes, striking makeup, and exaggerated expressions of the characters left a deep impression on the young Vaikuntam.\u00a0 His earliest experiments with art in childhood, were sketches of the various characters \u2013 Rama, Hanuman, Krishna and Ravana, that he saw in these dramas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formal Education and Artistic Exploration<\/b><\/h2>\n

Vaikuntam\u2019s formal artistic education began at the <\/span>College of Fine Arts and Architecture<\/a><\/strong> in Hyderabad, where he studied painting. After completing his initial education in Hyderabad, Vaikuntam’s artistic journey took a significant turn when he was awarded a fellowship to study at the prestigious Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda. Here, under the guidance of his mentor, the renowned painter <\/span>K.G. Subramanyan<\/a><\/strong>,<\/strong> Vaikuntam honed his artistic skills and developed a clearer vision of his own style.
