The days of corporates picking up mithai or dry fruit boxes
\nand dispatching them en masse to customers with hastily scribbled cards are\u00a0long, long gone. Today, the corporate gift market is dynamic and evolving, and\u00a0every season we see something new, whether it\u2019s a floating crystal clock or a\u00a0branded, delicately embroidered Chinese silk neck-tie. \u2018Customers are asking for new designs, and it\u2019s because they are exposed to international trends,\u2019\u00a0says Vikram Sethi, CMD of Giftex. If design and the novelty value of gifts has\u00a0become paramount, it doesn\u2019t mean that utility has taken a back seat.\u00a0Corporates want to gift right on all counts. \u2018If the gift goes into a showcase\u00a0then recall value is nil, and so the trend towards usable gifts,\u2019 says T.S.\u00a0Raman, CEO, Asian Adores.<\/p>\n

However, while brand recall is what the bottom line dictates,\u00a0corporate gifting is more than just that. It has been transformed into an art.\u00a0If a company gifts too little it can be percieved as cheap and if it gives too\u00a0much it can become a bribe. Gift the wrong thing, and it\u2019s considered bad\u00a0taste. \u2018The art of selecting the right gift is to understand the likes and\u00a0dislikes of the recipients and their particular taste. Only then will they\u00a0reward you with their goodwill,\u2019 says Brian Almeida, MD of Red Box Rewards.<\/p>\n

Aspirational value is important too and the best gifts are those that are\u00a0aspirational in nature. A foreign holiday for instance. Such gifts are usually\u00a0often the result of long-term loyalty programmes and are becoming part and\u00a0parcel of the marketing strategies of airlines and the retail sector. However\u00a0if a foreign holiday is offered to a company executive by a supplier, it will\u00a0be considered a bribe.<\/p>\n

Selecting an usable, acceptable and yet, exclusive gift\u00a0need not be an expensive exercise. Practical considerations do demand an\u00a0economic caste system, and gifts of different value and design are slotted for\u00a0different levels and for different target markets, say dealers, or\u00a0multinationals. Even at junior levels and in the less sophisticated markets\u00a0however, customers prefer exclusivity and novelty. They are more likely to\u00a0appreciate a box of dates with almonds ensconced within than chocolate barfi,\u00a0or a Rs 30\/- Chinese clock instead of a classic leather covered address book.\u00a0As a result, old, traditional items like diaries and table top items have gone on\u00a0the hit list. \u2018How many paper weights and diaries is someone going to use\u00a0anyway?\u2019 asks Sethi, relating an anecdote of a pharmaceutical company which\u00a0presented a doctor with a diary. The doctor told the representative to keep it\u00a0for himself.<\/p>\n

A thoughtless gift creates a negative impression. At best\u00a0it might remain an useless expenditure. \u2018The gift acts as a reminder that the\u00a0company exists. It\u2019s a kind of advertising, not a bribe,\u2019 says Raman. In fact,\u00a0gifting can be a terrific way of advertising, often very economical. \u2018Gifting\u00a0is cheaper than advertising,\u2019 says Sethi. \u2018You are going direct to your\u00a0customer and the cost per impression is fairly low.\u2019 If the customer uses your\u00a0gift daily, whether it\u2019s a wrist watch or a mixer grinder, he is going to favorably\u00a0disposed towards you every single day.\u2019<\/p>\n

While choosing the right gift is important, how you give it\u00a0is a vital aspect, because gifting is not just about brand recall, it\u2019s about\u00a0people probably why corporates, specially BPO\u2019s, are going in for internal\u00a0gifting in a big way). \u2018Gifting builds relationships, and how you present is\u00a0critical,\u2019 says Sethi. For example, there are not many people today who would\u00a0show off a set of glasses with the company\u2019s name emblazoned on it, even if\u00a0they are made of crystal. No one likes to be perceived as a free loader. And if\u00a0the receiver can afford glasses without company logos, why would he use those\u00a0that have them? \u2018People give these gifts away to their peons. The only person\u00a0these gifters please is their own boss, who wants to see a big bold company\u00a0logo.\u2019 If the company name must be used, feels Sethi, then it should not be\u00a0intrusive, or it can be used on the package or on the card.<\/p>\n

Some companies are not gift-oriented, and this often has to
\ndo with the industry they work in. \u2018People seriously concerned about their\u00a0business are hardly concerned with gifts. What matters to them is value created\u00a0for them in their business,\u2019 says Roshan Lal Agarwal, Head – National Sales,\u00a0Foseco India Ltd, an industrial chemicals company which sticks to giveaways\u00a0like calendars. At the other end there are pharmaceutical companies and BPO\u2019s,\u00a0where gifting is the rage. Pharma companies are believed to spend in the region\u00a0of Rs 700-800 crore (more than half the market) on gifts to doctors, and this\u00a0raises some ethical issues. Such issues are relevant across all industries, but\u00a0pharma companies come in for flak because doctors themselves, being\u00a0individuals, set their own rules.<\/p>\n

Large organisations on the other hand can have strict\u00a0policies on receiving gifts or unwritten rules, which if broken, raise\u00a0disapproving eyebrows. There are also companies which ban their executives from\u00a0accepting gifts altogether. \u2018Some multinationals have a blanket ban on\u00a0accepting gifts,\u2019 admits Raman, but he feels that this doesn\u2019t work. \u2018If a\u00a0company has to do business India, they have to gift, it\u2019s just a good will\u00a0gesture, thats all.\u2019 As long as the gift is not an expensive item like say\u00a0jewellery, then it\u2019s considered in good taste, and not perceived as a bribe.<\/p>\n

The Indian gift market is dynamic and growing, but is yet\u00a0to reach it\u2019s peak levels in terms of innovation or sophistication. \u2018Creativity\u00a0needs a boost,\u2019 feels Sethi, as he believes this to be only way to prevent\u00a0corporates from leaning towards imported products. He suggests marrying modern\u00a0design with Indian handicrafts, and he doesn\u2019t want us to stop with hand made\u00a0paper. \u2018Look at what the south east Asian market has done,\u2019 he says.\u00a0\u2018Traditional items like Fengshui products are being given as corporate gifts.\u2019<\/p>\n

The future however,\u00a0looks good. The Indian corporate executive now expects unique gifts, gifts\u00a0which are presented to him with style, and as a result the market is likely to\u00a0become increasingly sophisticated in the coming years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
